Chapter 14
This was going to be an abnormal date, for sure. There was no scene where the guy knocked on the door, and the girl lets him in only to then have the guy wait a little longer while she gets ready - before they’d leave hoping that they’d get swept away into a romantic, private evening. None of that could logistically happen.
Instead, Charlotte got ready in her room. There were two bathrooms in the house – a full one adjoined to her private room, and one for guests outside of her master suite. Charlotte was ready finally, not really sure exactly what she should be preparing for. John had said that he’d plan the date, which did surprise Charlotte since she knew he didn’t own much of anything, let alone have any money. She didn’t want John to feel burdened or incapable of providing, so Charlotte offered instead to pay for the date. John responded by saying not to worry, which only peaked her interest even more. Again, this could logistically not be a normal date.
But there was one thing that still held similar to a normal date. The anticipation. Some would call it butterflies, but that wasn’t a strong enough metaphor for Charlotte – or John.
For Charlotte there was the anticipation of all the questions in her mind. They had been childhood friends – was she ready to see if they could cross that line? Was she ready to not only – finally – have a guy in her life, but actually have two of them? How would Jack take this all, being so young and understandably missing his mother so much? But most of all, Charlotte wondered if she was actually ready to test fate by seeing if she could focus on something other than her career. She wasn’t necessarily compromising her career just by potentially having John in her life as more than a friend. But she always knew that fate wanted her on that street corner, and focusing on her career was her way of turning her back on that fateful path. Was she actually ready to open herself up to a relationship, no matter the cost?
For John, the anticipation was just as heightened. Not only was he ready to try and move on after all these years, but he knew that if he could actually do it – Charlotte was the one person in the whole world whom he could actually try to move on with. There really was no one else he’d rather have in his life as a partner. But with that realization came the sole question that was the foundation of all of his anticipation: what did he have to give Charlotte when she’d found him owning nothing at all? As excited as he was for what he had planned that evening for him, Charlotte, and Jack, that single question left him with an uneasy worry about the situation. It was the feeling of being insignificant or incapable.
John sat on the couch, anxiously awaiting Charlotte to signal that she was ready.
